This portrait is special because of the friend that it depicts, and the expression I was able to evoke from the medium. Graphite is special because of how its physical properties create “graphite sheen”. If you look at graphite under a microscope, you’ll notice thin sheets of material layered like scales on a fish. When you attempt to build dark values on paper, these scales accumulate and eventually reflect light. I’ve been working to push this towards creating a holographic effect on my graphite pieces.
Printed using EPSON SureColor P9000 printers with archival quality inks onto Red River Paper’s Aurora Art White 300gsm gallery grade rag, 100% Cotton. My prints are produced by Steve Reeves at MakeShift Photo, a specialist in archival fine art prints.
